Lord Nazir Ahmed jailed for child sex offenses – WeForNews

New Delhi, February 4: Disgraced former Labor peer Lord Nazir Ahmed of Rotherham has been jailed for five years and six months for the sexual abuse of two children in the 1970s, the BBC has reported.

Nazir Ahmed was convicted in January of aggravated sexual assault of a boy and attempted rape of a girl.

The abuse happened in Rotherham when he was a teenager, Sheffield Crown Court said, according to the report.

In handing down the sentence, Judge Lavender said his actions had “profound and lifelong effects” on the victims, according to the report.

The court heard Lord Ahmed, who was tried under his birth name Nazir Ahmed, tried to rape the girl twice in the early 1970s when he was 16 or 17 but she was much younger.

The attack on the boy, then under the age of 11, also happened during the same period.

The judge said the offenses were “so serious that only a custodial sentence can be justified”.

He said: “Your actions had profound and lasting effects on the girl and the boy, who lived with what you put them through for 46 to 53 years.

“The statements they made speak more eloquently than I ever could how your actions have affected and continue to affect their lives in so many different and detrimental ways,” according to the report.
