Comedian Pete Davidson has been dating Kim Kardashian for several months.
Kardashian’s online fandom is generally supportive of the relationship, but that hasn’t always been the case.
5 creators told Insider why they reconciled with the couple over time.
In early June, when TMZ released paparazzi footage of Pete Davidson taking Kim Kardashian’s 6-year-old son Saint West on a day at The Cheesecake Factory, the video went viral among popular Kardashian fans and news accounts on TikTok and Instagram. .
Followers began to wonder if this was a sign that Davidson, who was dating Kim after her divorce from Ye, formerly Kanye West, was getting closer to the Kardashian family. Users said they thought Davidson would make a great “stepfather” to the Kardashian kids.
This represents a huge shift in the fandom’s attitude towards the relationship. When rumors first emerged that the pair were dating in late 2021, Kardashian followers responded with shock, disbelief and some even disdain. But following a high-profile attack by Ye, subscribers’ opinions began to change.
Insider spoke to five Kardashian fan account owners, all of whom said they’ve been watching her love life unfold for years. They explained why the community had such strong opinions about her relationship with Davidson and why they had turned her around over time.
Fans first thought the pair were incompatible on the surface
Davidson and Kardashian first sparked rumors when they kissed during a skit on “Saturday Night Live,” the late-night show on which Davidson spent eight years as a comedian. Screenshot of the on-screen kiss has gone viral on Twitter, with people saying they were surprised by the prospect of them being more than friends.
37-year-old Kardashian fan @bravo_boo, who did not want to be named for privacy reasons, told Insider that the age difference was one of the main reasons for her surprise at rumors that the couple were dating, which she posted on her fan account. (Kardashian is 13 years older than Davidson and joins a list of many female celebrities who have been criticized for dating younger men due to the pervasive social stigma surrounding it.)
Zoe Oloya, a 26-year-old fan who co-manages a Kardashian TikTok account with 40,000 followers, told Insider there were other reasons fans didn’t like Davidson at first too.
“He didn’t look like someone she would normally date. He didn’t look like the cool guy,” she said.
Several Kardashian fans have described Davidson with terms like “goofy”, “funny” and “covered in tattoos”, which contradicts their descriptions of Kardashian as “clean”, “correct” and “glamorous”. Davidson even called himself a “diamond in the trash.”
Davidson had also made headlines before for dating other high-profile celebrities, such as Ariana Grande and Kaia Gerber, over the years, making headlines like “Why do so many hot women like Pete Davidson? ” to browse the internet. But it was more than her dating history that fans had reservations about.
Some fans also said they had reservations about Davidson’s style of humor.
Oloya believes Davidson was also unpopular due to past controversial jokes he made. In particular, she said a sex joke he made about a baby in 2019, which recirculated on social media in early 2022, caused people to disapprove of Davidson and his relationship with children. from Kardashian.
Davidson has previously come under scrutiny for cracking jokes that some considered to be in poor taste and has apologized for on-air jokes in the past.
Davidson did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
When Kanye West started attacking Davidson on social media, fan sympathies changed
In February 2022, a year after Kardashian filed for divorce, Ye made a series of high-profile allusions to Davidson, including calling him “trash” and “trash,” according to Buzzfeed News, and posting a clip video that seemed to represent him. burying a cartoon version of Davidson. According to screenshots shared by Ye, Kardashian had accused him of “creating a dangerous and scary environment” that could end up hurting Davidson.
The debacle became huge news on social media, with various outlets reporting that an image shared by the rapper about his outbursts on social media had been turned into a meme.
It also led to fan polarization of Ye and Davidson. Adrienn Bellert, who has an Instagram account dedicated to sharing photos of the Kardashian and Davidson relationship, told Insider that Ye’s fanbase started attacking her and sending her death threats around this time. Other Kardashian fans also told Insider that they noticed Ye fans talking negatively about Davidson and Kardashian on Instagram following Ye’s comments.
Representatives for Ye did not respond to Insider’s request for comment.
Jessica, a 27-year-old Kardashian fan who wouldn’t reveal her last name for privacy reasons, told Insider that many longtime Kardashian fans were worried about her during this time. “I don’t know if he was trying to ruin his relationship, but it really felt like he was trying to prove his place and say, ‘She was my wife’ and for a lot of Kardashian fans that wasn’t. was definitely not a fun time,” she said.
This led to an outpouring of support for both Davidsons. Ayesha, an 18-year-old fan who didn’t want to share her last name for privacy reasons, told Insider, “Kanye made all these allegations against him but he dealt with them all calmly and in a very cool way, and that’s how I gradually started making fun of him. He looks like a badass but he’s actually an incredibly nice person.”
The tide changed drastically after that. The Kardashian fan community has since happily shared “cute” photos of Davidson and Kardashian traveling together, with many clips comparing Kardashian’s facial expressions in past photos and videos with Ye to current photos with Davidson.
“It’s the way they talk and play in the water in their vacation photos, and he takes videos of her. They look so cute and like to have fun. I don’t remember the seeing like that when she was with Kanye,” Bellert told Insider.
Now fans see Davidson as a great partner for Kardashian
Some fan account owners told Insider that they don’t think the couple are headed for marriage or a long-term relationship, but they believe fans will always be supportive.
“It won’t be the end of the world if they don’t work out, but it’s the perfect distraction from divorce for her, to clear her mind and give her hope for the future,” Jessica told Insider.
For Oloya, the way Davidson won over skeptical Kardashian fans taught him not to “judge a book by its cover” and to put aside his reservations.
“If she makes him happy, and if he makes her happy, then what’s the problem?” she says.
