Former Jayhawk 3-point king Billy Thomas named new head coach at Rockhurst High
Former Kansas sniper Billy Thomas has been appointed head basketball coach at Rockhurst High in Kansas City, Missouri, the school announced Thursday.
Thomas, who left KU as the all-time leader of the 3-point program – the record has since been broken by Jeff Boschee – played at KU from 1994 to 1998.
He succeeds Pete Campbell, who announced his retirement in early March.
The Work is Thomas’ second head coach concert at the high school level. He previously ran the Barstow School with huge success from 2010-21, leading the program to a record 83-9 from 2014-2016, which featured three appearances in the Missouri Class 3 state title game and a state title in 2015.
Thomas’ overall record at Barstow was 203-80.
In a press release sent out by the school, Thomas called the opportunity “an absolute honor and privilege.”
“I was drawn to the overwhelming reputation for success in all (Rockhurst’s) athletic programs as well as the chance to become more dedicated to my faith,” Thomas said in the statement.
School officials said Thomas’ past success as a coach and his reputation in basketball and beyond played a big role in his getting the job.
“Coach Thomas stood out to the search committee and to me as someone who can transform not only our basketball program, but our school as well,” said Michael Dierks, DA of Rockhurst. “We believe he will fit in perfectly with what it means to be a Rockhurst coach and a young men’s leader.
Rockhurst manager Reverend Vincent Giacabazi added: “Coach Thomas’ reputation in basketball is very impressive. He clearly shows that he cares about student-athletes in the way he talks about his work with them to be the best in themselves on court and in life.
