Restoration of the cathedral

The Salford Cathedral restoration project officially begins on Monday 5 September. The restoration work is part of a master plan ahead of the 175th anniversary of the cathedral’s inauguration in 2023. The project aims to revive the iconic splendor of our mother church while making it the most enduring cathedral in the country. .

The Simpsons of York were selected to undertake both Phase 1 (exterior works) and Phase 2 (interior works) of the restoration project. The contractors will be on site to begin setting up their complex and other related work on Monday, September 5, 2022.

The first phase of the restoration work will focus on the exterior of the cathedral, which will involve a complete re-roofing, repointing of the masonry and other masonry repairs, as well as repair work on the tower and the arrow. During the first part of the first phase, the cathedral will remain open. However, there may occasionally be disruptions to the Cathedral’s daily schedule, but this will be kept to a minimum where possible.

The cathedral will then close at the end of April 2023, for the start of work on phase two, which will consist of the restoration of the interior of the cathedral. During this second phase, the sacramental and devotional life of the cathedral will be accommodated in a temporary church, located in the gardens of the cathedral.
